Vehicle, Building & Wayfinding Signage Design

When people think of graphic design, they often picture logos, business cards, or websites. But there is a highly specialised side of the industry that doesn’t get talked about as much – signage design.

Despite popular belief, not all designers understand signage, and not all signwriters are trained in graphic design. They are two different skill sets that overlap, but require very different knowledge.

Signage design is not just about making something look good on screen. It involves understanding materials, production methods, installation requirements, visibility, durability, and cost efficiency. Without this, even a strong design can become unworkable in the real world.

A common issue in the industry is that designers (and sometimes even experienced ones) can underestimate production constraints, material costs, and installation limitations. Likewise, signwriters may not always have the design training needed to develop strong visual concepts from scratch.

Preparing correct production files is also critical. Outlining fonts, converting paths, and supplying clean vector artwork is what ensures a smooth handover from designer to signwriter. Without this, projects can quickly become delayed, expensive, or unworkable.

At Crispin Design, we bridge that gap.

Sarah from Crispin Design has extensive, hands-on experience across graphic design, signwriting, print production, and large-format digital printing. This cross-industry experience means we understand both sides of the process – design intent and real-world production – which results in signage that not only looks strong, but actually works.

Our Experience

Sarah’s creative journey began with a Graphic Design diploma in 2003. She started in the industry as a trainee signwriter, before moving into screen printing and screen making while studying marketing and business part-time.

From there, she worked in a Christchurch signwriting company operating wide-format digital printers and producing nationwide print campaigns and signage applications. This was followed by in-house design and print production roles, where deadlines, scale, and fast-paced output became part of everyday work.

That combination of design, production, and signage experience is what shaped Crispin Design’s approach today. Some of our high profile projects include Gore District Council public spaces wayfinding signage, Pukerau Cemetery and GDC library internal signage design.

We also work closely with trusted local signage installers to ensure every project is produced and installed to a high standard – from concept to completion.

Design Options

  • Outdoor signage – building signage, billboards, window graphics
  • Wayfinding signage – reception signage, corporate spaces, wall decals
  • Vehicle signage – fleet signage, decals, partial wraps, full vehicle wraps
  • Promotional signage – banners, flags, exhibition displays and more

Vehicle signage is one of the most effective forms of mobile advertising. Utes, vans, trailers, food trucks, boats, and even scooters can become moving billboards for your brand. When done well, it is a long-term, cost-effective marketing tool.

Our Process

1. Design Consultation

We meet on-site, at our office, or online to discuss your signage requirements, timeline, budget, and installation location.

If required, we will visit site to take measurements, photographs, and assess visibility or installation considerations. For out-of-region clients, detailed measurements and images can be provided remotely.

2. Design Development

Our design team develops your signage concepts based on the brief. In some cases, we may present multiple options, balancing cost, materials, and visual impact.

Once a concept is approved, you can either take it to your preferred signwriter for quoting and production, or we can manage this process for you.

3. Production & Installation

We work with experienced signage installers known for precision and attention to detail.

We supply fully prepared production files including scaled visual drawings, vector artwork, print-ready files, and colour specifications to ensure accurate manufacturing.

4. The Big Reveal

Your finished signage is installed and your brand is out in the world – working for you 24/7 as a visual marketing tool.

Good signage is not just design – it’s design that works in the real world. Our strength lies in understanding both creative execution and production reality, ensuring what gets designed can actually be built, installed, and last.
