Time out with…

Article from Essence Mid Canterbury February 2013 Issue.

A talented graphic designer and small business owner, Sarah also works for essence magazine, creating our fresh, innovative advertising each month.

Where did you grow up?

Up until the age of five I lived on a hill country farm at Mangamahu an hour out of Whanganui with my Mum, Dad and my younger sister. Our family then moved down south to a farm in Winchmore, Ashburton. My secondary school years were spent in Christchurch at St Margaret’s College. And then studying/working in Christchurch until a move even further south down to Gore. After 3 years in the deep south I followed my partner back to up Canterbury.

What exactly does a graphic designer do?
Basically I create stylish and versatile branding solutions to help promote new or existing businesses.

What do you enjoy most about graphic design?
I always find it exciting working with businesses to help them create a new brand identity and then see it carried through onto their printed promotional material, advertising, signage, website design and so on. There are so many creative yet cost effective options for promoting business.

I also enjoy my essence magazine weeks. Setting advertising gives me a nice break from all the different thought processes and hours that go into a logo design or a new brand.

Why should a business come to you for their new branding or logo?
My aim is to create versatile logos and branding styles that can easily be transferred onto newsprint advertising, signage and the web without any hassle.

I’m quite budget conscious myself and having worked previously as signwriter, digital printer and in newspaper advertising I understand what is practical to reproduce. I’m always careful to not draw up something so ‘out there’ that the cost to replicate will blow any small businesses budget.

What do you see for the future?
Early last year I had teamed up with a website designer, creating a joint business; Good Taste Web Design, offering small-medium businesses packaged website deals from $850 -$1950 or practical custom designs from $1200-$5000. We can already see there is a lot of potential for growth in this business.
